A Team Led by a Multilingual Attorney and Highly Educated Immigrant

At the helm of Smit Law Group is attorney Margaretha “Greta” Smit. Greta is an immigrant herself, having initially come to the United States from Holland in 1997 for an internship she completed in the course of pursuing an international MBA. She has also earned a master’s degree in European studies, which provides our law firm with strong knowledge of international affairs.

Greta speaks Dutch, English, Spanish, German, and French. Her multilingual fluency allows her to, in many cases, communicate with the clients we serve in their native language.

As an immigrant herself, Greta Smit fully appreciates, on a personal as well as professional level, the challenges, concerns, and struggles our clients face. We understand your questions, your fears, and what’s at stake. Our firm brings not only compassion but real empathy.

A Practice Built From Scratch at the Intersection of Immigration and Family Law

Once Greta discovered her passion for law, she earned her Juris Doctor from Golden Gate University School of Law and trained in the practice of immigration law under a former USCIS adjudicator. After her employer’s firm collapsed, she rose to the challenge of building her own firm from scratch with remarkable resilience, and she established a practice that thrived entirely on word-of-mouth referrals for over a decade.

Our law firm represents clients in a wide range of immigration law and family law matters, from applying for a temporary visa or permanent status through a Green Card to resolving divorce disputes that involve child custody, child support payments, and property division. Our knowledge of both areas of legal practice is particularly valuable in matters where immigration and family law intersect, including custody issues complicated by concerns over immigration status.

We routinely fight for our clients in immigration court and in family court, but we also skillfully resolve cases out of court when possible.

A Commitment to Serving Clients With Empathy, Advocacy, and Compassion

Our firm has always focused on representing clients with the utmost compassion and genuine care. We’re devoted to educating the immigrant community and local families on their rights and available options, especially when they’re facing situations that give rise to fear, stress, and potential separation from their loved ones.

We give every client we serve personalized attention. Our clients work one-on-one with Greta, and they’re never passed off to a junior associate or case manager instead. That means every legal matter benefits from our firm founder’s full experience (nearly two decades) and her extensive knowledge of every aspect of federal immigration processes and Nevada family court procedures.
